WOW air was founded in November, 2011 and commenced operations on May 31, 2012. Headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland and based at Keflavik International Airport, WOW is a low cost carrier and an affordable alternative for travel between North America and Europe.

In March, 2019, the airline was unable to secure financing. WOW air abruptly ceased operations, leaving many customers on their own to re-book flights with other airlines.

The airline currently has a fleet of 11 aircraft flying to 26 destinations in Europe, Canada and the United States. In Canada, WOW flies to just Toronto and Montreal with those routes starting in 2016. The fleet consists of Airbus A321-200, Airbus A321neo and Airbus A320neo aircraft.

The former WOW air fleet has been leased out to Air Canada and will fly for Air Canada Rouge.
