C-FKCO is one of 42 aging Airbus A320-200 aircraft in the Air Canada main fleet. The A320 had a scary experience back in 1999 when it landed 250 feet short of the threshold on a windy night in St. John’s, Newfoundland. More on that below.
We photographed C-FKCO on January 28, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). C-FKCO
C-FKCO took its maiden flight on November 27, 1991 and was delivered to Air Canada on February 6, 1992. The Airbus A320-211 is configured for a maximum total of 146 passengers with 14 seats in business class and 132 more in economy class. This is one of 42 A320 models in the main fleet, but a gradual phase-out will begin later this year.
Back on September 24, 1999, C-FKCO was involved in a bit of scary incident on a flight from Toronto, Ontario to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Landing after midnight with strong, gusty winds, the A320 touched down around 250 feet short of the threshold, blasting through sawhorse style construction barriers. There were no injuries but the airplane received damage to two brake lines and a brake temperature sensor.
More recently, on March 29, 2015 the Airbus A320 was flying from Montreal, Quebec to Vancouver, British Columbia. About 240 miles past Calgary, Alberta, both ECAM displays went blank. The crew diverted to Calgary (YYC) for a safe landing. A circuit breaker that had tripped was reset, solving the problem and the flight was able to continue to its destination.
Airbus A320-200
The Airbus A320-200 was introduced with Air France in 1988 and since nearly 4,400 have been delivered to airlines around the world. This is the initial variant in the Airbus A320 Family with the A321 being a stretched versions while the A319 and A318 are shorter.
The A320 is 38 metres or 123 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the aircraft stands 12 metres or 39 feet in height. The flight range is 6,100 kilometres.
Air Canada
Air Canada was founded in 1937 as Trans Canada Air Lines. Although the airline went under its current name unofficially for some time, they commenced operations as Air Canada on New Year’s Day, 1965. The main fleet has around 175 aircraft that fly to over 200 destinations worldwide. With subsidiaries included, those numbers increase to over 400 airliners flying to 350 destinations.
Headquartered on the grounds of Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in Dorval, Quebec, Air Canada is a founding member of the Star Alliance, along with Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways and United Airlines. There are now 27 member airlines around the world.
