C-FNAW: Air Canada Embraer ERJ-190AR At Toronto Pearson (YYZ)

c-fnaw air canada embraer erj-190ar toronto yyzA lemon? C-FNAW, an Embraer ERJ-190AR belonging to Air Canada, has had some issues in it’s relatively short life. Nothing serious, but there have been three recorded incidents with this airplane just since 2012.

C-FNAW

This Embraer ERJ-190AR took its first flight in January, 2008 and was delivered to Air Canada on February 2, 2008. Based out of Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec, the airplane is configured for a total of 97 seats. There are nine in business class, 20 in premium economy and 68 in economy class.

On May 16, 2012, C-FNAW was traveling from Calgary, Alberta (YYC) to Vancouver, British Columbia (YVR). Upon takeoff out of Calgary, the landing gear was not retract. The ERJ-190 returned to Calgary 20 minutes later. It was determined that the left main gear weight on wheels proximity sensor had corroded contacts.

On May 8, 2015, it was a bit of a non-issue but C-FNAW did have to return to its airport of departure shortly after takeoff. On a flight from Toronto to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, an usual odour was observed shortly after takeoff. The airplane returned to YYZ 30 minutes later. No problems were found and two air filters were replaced as a precaution. The passengers were transferred to a similar ERJ-190 and reached their destination with a two hour delay.

On January 30, 2016 at LaGuardia Aiport in New York, it was not a mechanical issue that threatened the aircraft. C-FNAW entered the runway without clearance resulting in an Air Canada Airbus A320 having to abort its landing resulting in a go-around. Both airplanes went on there way without further incident. The Canadian Transportation Safety Board deemed it a serious incident worthy of further investigation.

Embraer ERJ-190AR

The Embraer ERJ-190AR made its first flight on March 12, 2004. The first delivery went to JetBlue in 2005. Air Canada is second only to JetBlue for having the most ERJ-190AR’s in their fleet. This plane can be configured for as many as 124 passengers in a single class setup or 100 in a two class configuration.

The airplane is 36 metres or 119 feet in length with a wingspan of 29 metres or 94 feet. At the tail, the airplane stands eleven metres or 35 feet tall. The flight range for the 190AR is 4,537 kilometres.

Embraer was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Air Canada

Air Canada is headquartered at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec. The airline was founded in 1937 as Trans Canada Air Lines. On New Year’s Day in 1965, the name was changed to Air Canada. There are 169 aircraft in the airline’s fleet and Air Canada travels to 200 destinations worldwide.

Air Canada is a founding member of the Star Alliance. Star consists of 27 airlines worldwide. Other founding members include Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways and United Airlines.
