N478UA made its first flight on June 27, 2001 and the Airbus A320-232 was delivered to United Airlines on August 9, 2001. This is one of 97 Airbus A320 aircraft in the main United fleet. On April 13, 2004, N478UA was transferred to UA’s Ted subsidiary. It was returned back to the main fleet on October 1, 2008.
Ted was a brand under United Airlines that existed from 2004 until 2009. Not technically a subsidiary as planes could be substituted back and forth between the main airline and Ted. The name is derived from the last three letters in United.
The brand had a fleet of 56 Airbus A320 aircraft, all configured for 156 passengers in a single class system. Ted traveled to 23 destinations in the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico taking passengers to vacation locations and operating in the low cost carrier market. The main hub for Ted was Denver International Airport (DEN).
The first Airbus A320 was introduced with Air France in 1988. Since, nearly 4,400 have been manufactured and around 7,500 from the whole A320 family have been produced.
The aircraft is 38 metres or 123 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the plane is 12 metres or 39 feet in height. The flight range for this airplane is 6,100 kilometres.
The A320 is the first from the Airbus A320 family. The A321 is an extended version at 45 metres or 146 feet in length. The A319 is shorter at 34 metres or 111 feet and the A318 is the most compact at 31 metres or 103 feet in length.
United Airlines was founded in 1926 and commenced operations in 1931. The airline is a member of the Star Alliance and is headquartered at the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago, Illinois. United has a fleet of nearly 750 aircraft and flies to nearly 350 destinations worldwide.
United has 18 Boeing 747-400 aircraft left in the fleet that will all be phased out by the end of October, 2017. The largest airplane in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER. The most of any one aircraft is the Boeing 737-800, with the Boeing 737-900 not far behind.
