We don’t get to see Air Malta in Canada. The destination range of this small airline is limited to 39 destinations in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Still, it’s an airline that North Americans should keep in mind if they plan on travel across the Atlantic. Air Malta is priced in line with ultra low cost carriers RyanAir and easyJet. The difference is in the comfort and service.

Air Malta
The airline was founded in 1973 and commenced operations on April 1, 1974. A predecessor, Malta Airlines, had existed since around the end of World War II. Air Malta is the flag carrier of the small island nation.
Air Malta is headquartered at the Skyparks Business Centre on the grounds of the Malta International Airport (MLA) in Luqa (Valletta). That airport is located between Luqa and Gudja and was formerly a Royal Air Force base. In 1992, the airport was completely refurbished and in 2017 received over 6,000,000 passengers. The longest runway is 11,627 feet, or 3,544 metres.
Fleet
Air Malta has a fleet of ten aircraft, all Airbus models. Eight of the ten are Airbus A320-200 airlines while the airline also has one Airbus A319-100 and one Airbus A320neo. A very safe airline to fly with, there have been no fatal accidents in Air Malta’s history.
The last major incident of note occurred back on June 9, 1997. A Boeing 737-200 was flying to Istanbul, Turkey when it was hijacked by two Turkish men. The hijacking ended in Cologne, Germany with no casualties.
About The Country
The Republic of Malta came to be in 1974 and Republic Day is celebrated on December 13. British Troops full withdrew from the island in 1979 and, for that, March 31 is celebrated as Freedom Day. It had originally become a British Colony in 1815. In 1964, the Malta Independence Act came into place and the island became knows as the State of Malta. For this part of history, September 21 is celebrated as Independence Day.
A member of the United Nations since 1964 and a member of the European Union since 2004, the country is actually an island archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. They are located just 80 kilometres south of Italy. The capital city is Valletta. Both Maltese and English are the country’s official languages.
