There’s something off about C-FLUJ, A Flair Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8. The livery (paint job) has some quirks that are just not quite right. We’ll take a closer look below. We photographed this B38M on August 5, 2022 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-FLUJ

C-FLUJ performed its first flight on June 17, 2022 and was delivered to Flair Airlines on June 29, 2022. This is not the newest Boeing 737 MAX 8 in the Flair fleet but it is the youngest. This airliner is configured for a maximum total of 189 passengers, all in economy class.

If you take a closer look at this aircraft, you’ll notice the livery is different that other airplanes in the Flair fleet. First, the winglets are painted blue, a colour that is not consistent with the Canadian ultra low cost airline’s branding. Also, near the back of the fuselage where it would normally state the model as a Boeing 737 MAX 8 or Boeing 737-8, it has been shortened to just Boeing 737.

The reason for this is that this B38M was originally slated for Air Europa. The blue is consistent with that airline’s colours. Air Europa recently had a major reduction in aircraft and is constantly the subject of buy-out and merger talks.

Air Europa was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in Llucmajor, Mallorca, Spain. The airline has a fleet of 39 aircraft and flies to 44 destinations. They still have 31 Boeing 737 MAX 8 airliner’s on order but with no delivery date.

After only flying for a month, C-FLUJ ran into its first challenge. On a flight from Toronto to Abbotsford, British Columbia (YXX), the airplane suffered a bird strike while landing. There was no damage to the aircraft and the B38M landed safely.

Boeing 737 MAX 8

The initial variant in the Boeing 737 MAX family, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 made its maiden flight on January 29, 2016. The B38M was introduced with launch customer Malindo Air on May 22, 2017. In its infancy, the MAX family has over 4,000 orders with just 80 of those orders filled as of January, 2018.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length, making it slightly longer than the Boeing 737-800, the airliner it is replacing. The wingspan is 36 metres or 118 feet and the airplane stands 12 metres or 40 feet at the tail (making it slightly shorter than the B738). The flight range is 6,570 kilometres, which is a significant 1,000 KM increase over the Boeing 737-800.

Flair Airlines

Flair Airlines was founded in 2005. Currently, the Canadian airline has a fleet of 24 aircraft flying to over 30 destinations. The fleet consists of mostly Boeing 737 MAX 8 models with a few Boeing 737-800 aircraft. All of the airlines Boeing 737-400 airplanes have been phased out.

Flair is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Edmonton International Airport (YEG) serves as its main hub. The airline began as an all cargo business, making deliveries between Canada and Cuba on behalf of Cubana. Flair does operate some flights on behalf of Air Transat.
