C-FYNS started life as a Airbus A319-100 prototype #2 in 1995. Like prototype #1, C-GBIP in the mainline Air Canada fleet, it also made its way to Canada’s largest airline. We photographed this A319 on April 17, 2019 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-FYNS

C-FYNS performed its first flight on October 31, 1995. The Airbus A319-114 started life as an Airbus A319-131, registered F-WWAS. This airliner was known as prototype #2 for Airbus Industrie. As mentioned, the A319 that is now C-GBIN, in the main fleet of Air Canada, was prototype #2.

After being converted to an Airbus A319-114, the airliner was delivered to Air Canada on July 4, 1997 as C-FYNS. On March 24, 2014, the A319 was transferred to the Rouge fleet.

This airplane is configured for a maximum total of 136 passengers. There are 12 seats in Premium Rouge, eight more in Rouge Plus and 116 economy class seats.

Through it’s nearly 25 years in the sky, this Airbus A319-100 has had an outstanding safety record. On December 24, 2014, it was flying from Orlando, Florida to Toronto, Ontario when it had to abort a takeoff.

Traveling at 100 knots, the right side engine ingested a Sandhill Crane. The engine lost power. After rejecting the takeoff, the aircraft returned to the terminal and the flight was cancelled. As a result, damaged fan blades were replaced on the affected engine.

Air Canada Rouge

Air Canada Rouge was founded in December, 2012 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Canada. The brand has a fleet of over 60 aircraft flying to 50 destinations. Prior to March, 2020, there were 25 Boeing 767-300ER, 22 Airbus A319-100, four Airbus A320-200 and 14 Airbus A321-200 models.

The airline announced at the start of May, 2020 that all Boeing 767 and Airbus A319 aircraft would be retired, a result of the COVID-19 fallout. This leaves the brand with just 18 airlines, all either Airbus A321-200 or Airbus A320-200. Through the main airline, Rouge is a member of the Star Alliance.
