Earlier in 2017, C-GWCM had a similar incident at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The wingtip of the WestJet Boeing 737-700 came in contact with another aircraft on the taxiway. Damage was minimal with the aircraft back in service later in the day.

C-GWCM

C-GWCM took its maiden flight on November 13, 2003 and was delivered to WestJet on December 4, 2003. The Boeing 737-7CT is one of 56 in the main WestJet fleet. The airliner is configured for a maximum total of 134 passengers with 12 seats in business class and 122 more in economy class.

On January 22, 2013, C-GWCM was flying from Toronto, Ontario to Cancun, Mexico. At 39,000 feet, around 150 miles west of Orlando, Florida, crew came across a fuel imbalance of 600 lbs. The imbalance remained after 20 minutes and the cross feed valve circuit breaker had tripped. As a precaution, the aircraft diverted to Orlando for a safe landing. The problem resulted from the right side cross feed valve stuck in the half open position. The valve motor actuator assembly was replaced.

Later that year, on September 2, 2013, the Boeing 737-700 was flying from Montreal, Quebec to Vancouver, British Columbia. After landing at YVR, crew reported a fire in the aft cargo hold. Emergency crews met the aircraft on the taxiway but no sign of fire, heat or smoke was found. The culprit was a live TV amplifier in the cargo bay that had self-destructed.

On May 11, 2017, C-GWCM had just landed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on a flight from Toronto. On the taxiway, the left side wing tip of the WestJet 737 came in contact with another airplane’s horizontal stabilizer. The damage was assessed and the airliner was released back for service later that day.

The initial variant of the Boeing 737 Next Generation Family, the Boeing 737-700 first entered service in 1998 with Southwest Airlines. Southwest remains the primary user of this model of aircraft. The Boeing 737-700 is 34 metres or 110 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airliner stands 13 metres or 41 feet in height. The flight range is 5,570 kilometres.

WestJet

WestJet was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Currently they have a fleet of nearly 125 aircraft with just less than 60 more on order. These airplanes fly to over 90 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Currently, the fleet consists of four variants of Boeing 737 and four Boeing 767-300ER models. Included in the orders for future delivery are ten Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. These numbers do no include subsidiaries WestJet Encore and Swoop. Encore flies strictly Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 airliners. Swoop will begin service in June, 2018 with a fleet of Boeing 737-800 airplanes.
