It started life with Trans World Airways, also flying for American Airlines and AirTran along the way before settling in with Delta Air Lines in 2014. We photographed N919AT on October 19, 2017 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

N919AT

N919AT performed its maiden flight on February 19, 2001 and was first delivered to Trans World Airlines on April 12, 2001 as N2417F. TWA was founded in 1924 as Western Air Express and commenced operations under the Trans World Airlines name in 1926. The airline ceased operations on December 1, 2001 when it was acquired by American Airlines. At the time, TWA had 30 Boeing 717-200 aircraft in their fleet.

On December 2, 2001, the Boeing 717-231 was officially transferred to American Airlines, keeping the N2417 registration. On January 15, 2003, the B712 was delivered to AirTran as N919AT. AirTran was founded in 1992 as ValuJet Airlines, commencing operations the following year. In 1997, the name changed to AirTran. The airline ceased operations on December 28, 2014 after being fully integrated into Southwest Airlines.

Since Southwest only flies Boeing 737 airliners, N919AT was leased to Delta on June 12, 2014. The airplane is configured for a maximum total of 110 passengers with 12 seats in business class, 15 more in premium economy and 83 economy class seats.

On August 9, 2001, not even four months into service with TWA, N2417F has some major issues on a flight from Nashville, Tennessee to St. Louis, Missouri. On approach to St. Louis, the nose gear would not extend. An emergency landing occurred at Scott Air Force Base because of the longer runway. The Boeing 717-200 was brought to rest with its nose resting on the tarmac. Extensive damage was done to the aircraft but, obviously, it was repaired. The issue is attributed to a collision with a wheel chock while on the ground at a previous stop.

The maiden flight of the Boeing 717-200 took place on September 2, 1998 and the first entered service with launch customer AirTran on October 12, 1999. The final B712 ever built was also delivered to AirTran. Originally, this was to be the MD-95 built by McDonnell Douglas but the two manufacturers merged in 1997. In all, 156 were built between 1998 and 2006.

The Boeing 717-200 is 38 metres or 124 feet in length with a wingspan of 28 metres or 93 feet. At the tail, the aircraft stands nine metres or 30 feet in height. Delta Air Lines is the currently the world’s largest operator of the B712 with 91 in service.

The airline was founded in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters and commenced operations as Delta Air Lines in 1929. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Delta is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance. Other founding members include AeroMexico, Air France and Korean Air. There are now 20 full members and the alliance is headquartered at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands.

The main Delta fleet has over 850 aircraft flying to 325 destinations around the world. The highest capacity airliner in the fleet is the Airbus A350-900. All their Boeing 747-400 airplanes were phased out with the last retired in 2017.
