N923AT

N923AT took its first flight on September 17, 2005 and was delivered to AirTran Airways on October 4, 2005. After AirTran was integrated into Southwest Airlines, the Boeing 717-2BD was leased out to Delta Air Lines, joining the fleet on February 1, 2015. This is one of 91 B712 aircraft currently in the Delta main fleet. The airliner is configured for a maximum total of 110 passengers with 12 seats in business class, 15 more in premium economy and 83 seats in economy class.

Now, a little about AirTran Airways. The airline was founded in 1992 as ValuJet Airlines and commenced operations under that name on October 26, 1993. The name change to AirTran came on November 17, 1997. The airline ceased operations on December 28, 2014, fully integrated into Southwest Airlines.

They were headquartered in Orlando, Florida and had a fleet of 140 aircraft flying to 69 destinations. The fleet consisted of 88 Boeing 717-200 and 52 Boeing 737-700 aircraft. The 737’s went to Southwest while the 717’s were leased out to Delta. AirTran was the launch customer for the Boeing 717-200 and also received the last B712 ever built.

Boeing 717-200

The first Boeing 717-200 took flight on September 2, 1998 and entered service with AirTran Airways on October 12, 1999. This aircraft was originally designed as the McDonnell Douglas MD-95 with that company merging with Boeing in 1997, before the first was delivered. Between 1998 and 2006, 156 B712 aircraft were built.

With the demise of AirTran, Delta is now the largest operator of the Boeing 717-200 with 91 in the fleet. Other operators include Hawaiian Airlines, QantasLink, Volotea and Turkmenistan Airlines. The airliner is 38 metres or 124 feet in length with a wingspan of 28 metres or 93 feet. At the tail, it stands nine metres or 30 feet in height.

Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines was founded in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters and commenced operations under its current name in 1929. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the airline has a main fleet of 850 airplanes flying to over 300 destinations around the world. Delta just finished their Boeing 747-400 phaseout making the Airbus A350-900 their largest capacity airliner.

The airline is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance, along with AeroMexico, Air France and Korean Air. The alliance now has 20 full members worldwide and is headquartered at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
