The Star Alliance was founded on May 14, 1997 with five initial members: Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways International, Air Canada, Lufthansa and United Airlines. Now, 20 years later, there are 27 full members.
Headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Star Alliance is the largest of the big three alliances by passenger count. The other two are SkyTeam and Oneworld. The airlines of the Star Alliance collectively fly a fleet of over 4,600 aircraft to more than 1,330 destinations in 192 countries around the world.

Adria Airways
Adria Airways joined the alliance on November 18, 2014. The Slovenian airline was founded on March 14, 1961 and is headquartered in Zgornji Brnik, Slovenia. Adria has a fleet of 13 aircraft flying to 24 destinations. The Airbus A319-100 is currently the largest aircraft in the fleet.
Aegean Airlines
Aegean Airlines joined on June 30, 2010. The Greek airline was founded in 1987 as Aegean Aviation and commenced operations as Aegean Airlines on May 28, 1999. Headquartered in Kifisia, Greece, the airline has a fleet of 47 flying to 88 destinations. The largest airliner in the fleet is the Airbus A321-200.
Air Canada
Air Canada was a founding member of the Star Alliance, joining on May 14, 1997. The Canadian airline was founded on April 10, 1937 as Trans Canada Air Lines and commenced ops as Air Canada on January 1, 1965. The airline is headquartered in Dorval, Quebec and has a fleet of 402 airplanes flying to 350 destinations (including subsidiaries). The largest airplane in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER.
Air China
Air China joined the alliance on December 12, 2007. The Chinese airline was founded and commenced operations in 1988. Headquartered in Beijing, China, the airline has a fleet of 390, flying to 201 destinations. The largest aircraft in the fleet is the Boeing 747-8i.
Air India
Air India joined Star on July 11, 2014. The Indian airline was founded October 15, 1932 as TATA Airlines and commenced operations as Air India on July 29, 1946. The airline is headquartered in Delhi, India and has a fleet of 114 aircraft flying to 89 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER and Air India still flies four classic Boeing 747-400 models.
Air New Zealand
Air New Zealand joined on May 3, 1999. The airline was founded on April 26, 1940 as TEAL and commenced ops on April 1, 1965 as Air New Zealand. Headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand, the airline has a fleet of 55, flying to 52 destinations. The largest airliner in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER.
All Nippon Airways
All Nippon Airways (ANA) joined the alliance on October 15, 1999. The Japanese airline was founded on December 27, 1952. Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, ANA has a fleet of 221 aircraft flying to 89 destinations around the world. Currently, the largest in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER. However, the airline has three Airbus A380-800 models on order for deliveries starting in 2019.
Asiana Airlines
Asiana Airlines joined on March 28, 2003. The South Korean airline commenced operations in 1988 and now has a fleet of 83 airplanes flying to 90 destinations worldwide. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Asiana’s largest aircraft is the Airbus A380-800. They still fly two Boeing 747-400 models.
Austrian Airlines
Austrian Airlines joined the Star Alliance on March 26, 2000. The airline was founded on September 30, 1957 and now falls under the Lufthansa Group ownership. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, the airline has a fleet of 86 flying to 130 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 777-200ER.
Avianca
Avianca joined the alliance on June 21, 2012. The Colombia based airline was founded on December 5, 1919 as SCADTA. Headquartered in Bogota, Colombia, the airline has a fleet of 173 aircraft flying to 114 destinations. They have subsidiaries in six other Central and South American countries, including: Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru. The largest airliner in the fleet is the Airbus A330-200 with eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner models on order with yet to be determined delivery dates.
Brussels Airlines
Brussels Airlines joined Star on December 9, 2009. The airline commenced operations on March 25, 2007 after a merger. Headquartered in Diegem, Belgium, the airline has a fleet of 50 aircraft flying to 96 destinations. This is another airline under Lufthansa Group ownership. The largest airplane in the fleet is the Airbus A330-300.
Copa Airlines
Copa Airlines joined on June 21, 2012. The Panamanian airline commenced operations on August 15, 1947 and has a fleet of 100 aircraft flying to 74 destinations. Headquartered in Panama City, Panama, the airline’s largest airliner is the Airbus A330-300.
Croatia Airlines
Croatia Airlines joined on November 18, 2004. The Croatian airline was founded on August 20, 1989 as Zagreb Airlines. Headquartered in Zagreb, Croatia, the airline has a fleet of 14 airplanes flying to 38 destinations. The largest aircraft in the fleet is the Airbus A320-200.
EgyptAir
EgyptAir joined the Star Alliance on July 11, 2008. The airline commenced operations in July, 1933 and has a fleet of 51 aircraft flying to 73 destinations. Headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, Egyptair’s largest airliner in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER.
Ethiopian Airlines
Ethiopian Airlines joined the alliance on December 13, 2011. The airline was founded on December 21, 1945 and has a fleet of 92 aircraft flying to 113 destinations. Ethiopian Airlines is headquartered at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The largest aircraft in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER.
EVA Air
EVA Air joined on June 18, 2012. the Taiwanese airline was founded on March 8, 1989 and commenced operations on July 1, 1991. Headquartered in Luzhu, Taoyuan City, Taiwan, the airline has a fleet of 76 aircraft flying to 77 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER.
LOT Polish Airlines
LOT Polish Airlines joined the alliance on October 26, 2003. The airline was founded on January 1, 1929 and now has a fleet of 55 aircraft flying to 83 destinations. Owned by the Government of Poland, LOT Polish Airlines uses Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) as its main hub. The largest aircraft in the fleet is a Boeing 777-200ER, in which they have just one.
Lufthansa
Lufthansa was one of the five founding members of the Star Alliance, joining on May 14, 1997. The German airline was founded on January 6, 1953 and commenced operations in 1955. Headquartered in Cologne, Germany, the airline has a fleet of 262 aircraft flying to 220 destinations around the world. The largest airplane in the Lufthansa fleet is the Airbus A380-800.
Scandinavian Airlines
Scandinavian Airlines was a founding member of the Star Alliance, joining on May 14, 1997. The airline was founded on August 1, 1946. Scandinavian is headquartered in Solna, Sweden and has a fleet of 160 airplanes flying to 119 destinations. The Airbus A340-300 is the largest aircraft in the fleet.
Shenzhen Airlines
Shenzhen Airlines joined the alliance on November 29, 2012. The Chinese airline was founded on November, 1992 and commenced operations on September 17, 1993. Headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, the airline has a fleet of 177 aircraft flying to 74 destinations. 51% owned by Air China, the largest aircraft in the fleet is the Airbus A330-300.
Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines joined Star on April 1, 2000. The airline was founded on May 1, 1947 as Malayan Airways and commenced operations as Singapore Airlines on October 1, 1972. Headquartered in the city of Singapore, the airline has a fleet of 112 airplanes flying to 64 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Airbus A380-800.
South African Airways
South African Airways joined on April 10, 2006. The airline was founded on February 1, 1934 and has a fleet of 55 airliners flying to 39 destinations. Owned by the Government of South Africa, the airline is headquartered in Kempton Park, South Africa. The largest in the fleet is the Airbus a340-600.
Swiss International Air Lines
Swiss International Air Lines joined Star Alliance on April 1, 2006. The airline was founded on March 31, 2002 out of the ashes of Swissair. Owned by Lufthansa Group, Swiss is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland and has a fleet of 75 flying to 102 destinations. The largest aircraft in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER, flying with subsidiary Swiss Global Air Lines. The largest in the main fleet is the Airbus A340-300.
TAP Portugal
TAP Portugal joined the alliance on March 14, 2005. The airline was founded on March 14, 1945 and commenced operations on September 19, 1946. Headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal, the airline has a fleet of 90 aircraft flying to 88 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Airbus A330-300 with four Airbus A340-300 models slated to phased out.
Thai Airways
Thai Airways is a founding member of the Star Alliance, joining on May 14, 1997. The airline was founded on March 29, 1960 and has a fleet of 99 airliners flying to 90 destinations. Thai Airways is headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand. The largest airplane in the fleet is the Airbus A380-800.
Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines joined the alliance on April 1, 2008. The airline was founded on May 20, 1933 and has a fleet of 329 aircraft flying to 302 destinations. Headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, Turkish Airlines has the Boeing 777-300ER as the largest airplane in the fleet.
United Airlines
United Airlines is a founding member of the Star Alliance, joining on May 14, 1997. The airline was founded on April 6, 1926 as Varney Air Lines and commenced operations on March 28, 1931 as United Airlines. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United has a fleet of 750 aircraft flying to 342 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 777-300ER. The last of their Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets will take its final scheduled flight on November 7, 2017.
