These are times of change and change is good. A6-BLL was one of several firsts for us on August 7, 2020. This wasn’t our first Etihad Airways aircraft, by any means. But, it was our first Boeing 787-9 from that airline. We photographed this B789 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

A6-BLL

A6-BLL performed its first flight on February 10, 2017. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was delivered to Etihad Airways on February 22, 2017. This is one of 30 B789 models in the fleet with 12 more on order.

The airplane is configured for a maximum total of 299 passengers, the more dense of two configurations. There are 28 seats in business class and 271 economy class seats.

On March 11, 2020, this plane was flying from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to Lahore, Pakistan. On approach to the destination, the airliner was struck by lightning. Despite subsequent issues with the navigation and communication systems, it continued on for a safe landing. After being grounded for eleven hours, A6-BLL was once again in action.

Etihad Airways was founded in July, 2003 and is headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The airline is based at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). That airport opened in 1982 and has two runways, both, 4,100 metres or 13,451 feet in length.
