AP-BGY

AP-BGY performed its maiden flight on March 8, 2005. The Boeing 777-240LR was delivered to Pakistan International Airlines on February 26, 2006. This is one of two B77L models in the fleet, along with AP-BGZ.

This airliner is configured for a maximum total of 310 passengers. There are 35 seats in business class, 60 more in premium economy and 215 economy class seats.

Incidents

On February 24, 2013, this airplanes was flying from Karachi, Pakistan to Toronto, Ontario. On departure, a gear indication was reported. The issue was resolved shortly after and the flight continued on. Cruising at 34,000 feet, about 200 miles east of Manchester, England, a gear indication was once again received. It was decided to divert to Manchester for a safe landing.

On a planned flight, this time, from Manchester to New York City on April 23, 2016, a lavatory smoke indication caused the flight to be diverted to Shannon, Ireland. After six hours on the ground, the flight resumed to its destination.

Going in the other direction, this aircraft was flying from London, England to Lahore, Pakistan on August 26, 2019. On final approach to its destination, the left side engine ingested a bird. The airplane continued for a safe landing. It remained on the ground for eight hours before resuming service.

Most recently, on January 7, 2020, AP-BGY was flying domestically from Islamabad to Karachi. Due to air traffic controller error, the Boeing 777-200LR came within 45 seconds of a collision with an Emirates Boeing 777-300 while starting its descent into Karachi. As a result, three air traffic controllers were suspended.

Boeing 777-200LR

The LR in Boeing 777-200LR is for ‘longer range’. The B77L has been dubbed the Worldliner by its manufacturer as it can connect almost any two airports on Earth in a single flight. The variant holds the record for the longest non-stop flight by a commercial airliner.

The first Boeing 777-200LR was delivered to Pakistan International Airlines on February 26, 2006. In all, just 59 were delivered. The aircraft is 64 metres or 209 feet in length with a wingspan of 65 metres or 213 feet. At the tail, the airliner stands 19 metres or 61 feet in height. The flight range is 15,840 kilometers, more than 2,000 KM further than both the Boeing 777-200ER and Boeing 777-300ER.

Pakistan International Airlines

The national carrier of Pakistan was founded in 1946 as Orient Airways. In 1955, the airline became Pakistan International Airlines. PIA is headquartered in Karachi at Jinnah International Airport.

PIA travels to 30 domestic and 36 international destinations in 28 different countries. There are 43 planes in the fleet, consisting of Airbus A320, ATR 42-500 and 72-500, along with Boeing 777-200er, -200lr and -300er.

The airline retired its last Boeing 747 in 2015. An oddity amongst the world’s airlines, PIA also retired the last of its Boeing 737’s in 2015.
