C-FKOJ: Air Canada Airbus A320-200 (Rough Year In 2013)

c-fkoj air canada airbus a320-200 toronto pearson yyzOver its 26 years with Air Canada, C-FKOJ has a been a very reliable airplane. That is, with exception of a two month span in 2013 when everything seemed to go wrong for the Airbus A320-200. We photographed the A320 on March 25, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) with a Canon Rebel T6i DSLR camera. Take note of the blackness on the top of the tail exhaust…

C-FKOJ

C-FKOJ took its maiden flight on May 4, 1992 and was delivered to Air Canada on July 10, 1992. The Airbus A320-211 is one of 42 in the fleet with phase-outs expected to begin in 2019. The airliner is configured for a maximum total of 146 passengers with 14 seats in business class, 36 more in premium economy and 96 economy class seats.

On June 15, 2013, C-FKOJ was flying from Toronto, Ontario to Cancun, Mexico. The Airbus A320 was around Charlotte, North Carolina when a low green hydraulic fluid indication was received. The aircraft was diverted back to Toronto for a safe landing. As a result, the green hydraulic reservoir quantity transmitter and the system low level switch were replaced.

Less than a month later, on July 11, 2013, the A320 was flying from Montreal, Quebec to Calgary, Alberta within Canada. On the initial climb out of YUL, an avionics bay smoke indication was received. The climb was stopped at 3,000 feet and the airplane returned to Montreal for a safe landing after an aborted attempt.

Nine days later, the aircraft was performing a flight from Denver, Colorado to Montreal. On approach to Montreal, ‘gear down’ was selected but a hydraulic failure indication was received. After a go-around, the airplane landed safely but had to be towed off the runway. As a result, a hydraulic cylinder driving the door for the left hand main gear was replaced, along with the power transfer unit.

The Airbus A320-200 was first introduced in 1988 with Air France and is the initial variant in the Airbus A320 Family of aircraft. Since, nearly 4,400 have been delivered. The A320 is 38 metres or 123 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airliner stands 12 metres or 39 feet in height. The flight range is 6,100 kilometres. This model is in direct competition with the Boeing 737-800.
