Once, not to long ago, the Boeing 737-800 was the flagship of the WestJet fleet. Now, B738 aircraft like C-FRWA fall behind in size to the Boeing 767-300ER and in efficiency to the Boeing 737 MAX 8. Soon, they’ll get knocked further down the totem pole with the addition of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner models to the main fleet.
We photographed C-FRWA on May 20, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). C-FRWA
C-FRWA performed its maiden flight on December 13, 2012 and was delivered to WestJet Airlines on January 10, 2013. The Boeing 737-8CT is one of 48 in the main fleet with more flying for low cost subsidiary Swoop. The B738 is configured for a maximum total of 168 passengers with 12 seats in premium economy and 156 economy class seats.
On October 21, 2014, passengers aboard C-FRWA got an unexpected visit to Thunder Bay, Ontario on a flight from Edmonton, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario. Just past Thunder Bay, smoke was detected in the aft lavatory. The flight was diverted to YQT for a safe landing. The cause of the smoke was liquid hand soap that had leaked onto the electrical connectors for the bathroom lighting.
A year later, on December 3, 2015, the Boeing 737-800 experienced issues with the flaps on a flight from Calgary, Alberta to Vancouver, British Columbia. On approach to YVR, the flaps were not quite agreeing with the crew’s selections. After going around on the initial landing attempt, the aircraft came in safely on the second try. As a result, the left side flaps position transmitter was replaced.
Boeing 737-800
The most popular variant in the Boeing 737 Next Generation Family, there have been over 4,500 Boeing 737-800 models delivered to airlines around the world. The first B738 entered service in 1998. The aircraft is a direct competitor to the Airbus A320-200.
The Boeing 737-800 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airplane stands 13 metres or 41 feet in height. The flight range is 5,436 kilometres.
WestJet
Founded in 1996, WestJet is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian airline has a fleet of around 125 aircraft but that number will grow to around 180 in the near future. WestJet flies to nearly 110 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Not included in the above numbers are subsidiary WestJet Encore. That regional carrier flies a fleet of Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. Also not included is new ultra low cost carrier subsidiary Swoop. Swoop began service in June, 2018 with a small fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. With subsidiaries included, the fleet is nearly 175 strong.
