Long an operator of the Airbus A320 Family, Air Canada flew their last Boeing 737-200 in 2004, the only other variant of the 737 that has belonged to the airline. We photographed C-FSDB while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on March 25, 2018 with a Canon Rebel T6i DSLR camera.

C-FSDB

C-FSDB took its first flight on January 15, 2018 and was delivered to Air Canada on January 31, 2018. As mentioned, this is one of eight Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft currently in the main fleet (as of March 27, 2018) with 42 more on order. The B38M is configured for a maximum total of 169 passengers with 16 seats in business class and 153 more economy class seats.

Boeing 737 MAX 8

The initial variant in the Boeing 737 MAX family, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 made its maiden flight on January 29, 2016. The B38M was introduced with launch customer Malindo Air on May 22, 2017. In its infancy, the MAX family has over 4,000 orders with just 80 of those orders filled as of January, 2018.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length, making it slightly longer than the Boeing 737-800, the airliner it is replacing. The wingspan is 36 metres or 118 feet and the airplane stands 12 metres or 40 feet at the tail (making it slightly shorter than the B738). The flight range is 6,570 kilometres, which is a significant 1,000 KM increase over the Boeing 737-800.

Air Canada

Air Canada was founded in 1937 as Trans Canada Air Lines, under the watchful eye of the Canadian National Railway. The official name change came on New Year’s Day in 1965. The airline has a main fleet of around 175 aircraft flying to over 200 destinations worldwide. With subsidiaries added in, those numbers increase to over 400 aircraft flying to 350 destinations around the world.

The airline is headquartered at the Air Canada Centre, on the grounds of Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in Dorval, Quebec. They are a founding member of the Star Alliance, along with Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways and United Airlines. The alliance now has 27 member airlines around the world.
