One of 39 B738 models in the WestJet fleet at the time we photographed it, C-GKWA joined the Canadian airline in 2013. We captured this Boeing 737-800 on July 15, 2020 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GKWA
C-GKWA performed its first flight on February 27, 2013. The Boeing 737-8CT was delivered to WestJet on March 15, 2013. This airliner is configured for a maximum total of 174 passengers. There are 12 seats in premium economy and 162 more in economy class.
On July 16, 2013, this aircraft was flying from Phoenix, Arizona to Calgary, Alberta. Cruising at 38,000 feet, east of Las Vegas, Nevada, a smell of burning plastic was detected on the flight deck. The odour was also found in the cabin. The airplane was diverted to Las Vegas for a safe landing. Even after extensive maintenance inspections, no cause was ever found.
The following year, on July 24, 2014, this Boeing 737-800 was flying from Hamilton, Ontario to Calgary. The initial climb out of YHM was halted at 6,000 feet after the right side engine had it’s oil bypass light come on. The flight was diverted to Toronto Pearson for a safe landing.

The most popular variant in the Boeing 737 Next Generation Family, there have been over 4,500 Boeing 737-800 models delivered to airlines around the world. The first B738 entered service in 1998. The aircraft is a direct competitor to the Airbus A320-200.
The Boeing 737-800 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airplane stands 13 metres or 41 feet in height. The flight range is 5,436 kilometres.

WestJet
Founded in 1996, WestJet is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian airline has a fleet of nearly 170 aircraft. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is the largest remaining operator of the Boeing 737-600. WestJet flies to nearly 110 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Not included is new ultra low cost carrier subsidiary Swoop. Swoop began service in June, 2018 with a small fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft and now mostly flying Boeing 737 MAX 8 models. Swoop will cease to exist at the end of October, 2023 with its aircraft integrated back into the mainline. Also to be integrated in the near future will be the fleet of Sunwing.
