We’ve actually photographed C-GWSA several times but are just now featuring the WestJet Airlines Boeing 737-800 on the site. The images in the gallery below were taken on August 11, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GWSA

C-GWSA performed its maiden flight on June 7, 2005 and was delivered to WestJet Airlines on June 23, 2005. This Boeing 737-8CT is one of 42 B738 models currently in the main fleet of the Canadian airline. Out of those 42, there are only three others that are older than C-GWSA.

This airliner is configured for a maximum total of 168 passengers. There are 12 seats in premium economy and 156 economy class seats. This is quite a difference from the Boeing 737-800 airplanes in the fleet of Swoop, WestJet’s ultra low cost subsidiary. Those aircraft sat up to 189 passengers.

On August 18, 2012, C-GWSA was flying from Vancouver, British Columbia to Toronto, Ontario. On the descent towards YYZ, the flaps could not be extended. The initial approach was aborted. On the second try, the Boeing 737-800 came in for a safe but high speed landing with no use of the flaps. As a result, the left flap transmitter was replaced.

WestJet Airlines

Founded in 1996, WestJet is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian airline has a fleet of nearly 170 aircraft. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is the largest remaining operator of the Boeing 737-600. WestJet flies to nearly 110 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Not included is new ultra low cost carrier subsidiary Swoop. Swoop began service in June, 2018 with a small fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft and now mostly flying Boeing 737 MAX 8 models. Swoop will cease to exist at the end of October, 2023 with its aircraft integrated back into the mainline. Also to be integrated in the near future will be the fleet of Sunwing.
