C-GYQW: Air Transat Boeing 737-800 (Leased From SmartWings)

c-gyqw air transat boeing 737-800 toronto pearson yyzYou definitely call C-GYQW a community plane. The Boeing 737-800 has been seasonally leased back and forth between Europe and Canada since it first took flight in 2004. Currently, it is with Air Transat but leased from SmartWings. 2017-18 was the first winter season with Air Transat, previously spending all its winter months serving Sunwing.

We photographed C-GYQW on April 20, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). For full-size, high resolution versions for any of the photos in the image gallery, simply click on the individual pictures. See below for more detailed information on C-GYQW, the Boeing 737-800 model in general and the airline.

C-GYQW

C-GYQW performed its maiden flight on March 9, 2004 and was first delivered to Excel Airways on March 26, 2004 as G-XLAH. As mentioned, the Boeing 737-8Q8 has bounced around seasonally since it first went into service. Since 2004, it has also spent time with Sunwing Airlines, XL Airways, Travel Service and SmartWings. It has also been registered as C-FTAH (Sunwing) and OK-TVJ (SmartWings).

As of today, the B738 is still with Air Transat, leased from SmartWings. The winter of 2017-18 was the aircraft’s first time flying for Air Transat. C-GYQW is configured for a maximum of 189 passengers in a single class system. As of today, this is one of five Boeing 737-800 airliners in the Air Transat fleet but that number fluctuates often.

On February 21, 2008, while flying for Sunwing, the airplane was flying to Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport (FLL) from Toronto, Ontario. During the flight, the aircraft experienced rapid decompression. C-FTAH continued to its destination but dropped to 10,000 feet from 36,000 for the remainder of the flight.

On March 13, 2011, again flying for Sunwing, the B738 was flying from Toronto to Cozumel, Mexico. On takeoff, an airspeed discrepancy developed but the takeoff continued. On the initial climb, the stick shaker activated and the aircraft was leveled off at 3,000 feet. It was decided to divert back to YYZ for a safe landing 25 minutes after departure.

Boeing 737-800

The most popular variant in the Boeing 737 Next Generation Family, there have been over 4,500 Boeing 737-800 models delivered to airlines around the world. The first B738 entered service in 1998. The aircraft is a direct competitor to the Airbus A320-200.

The Boeing 737-800 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airplane stands 13 metres or 41 feet in height. The flight range is 5,436 kilometres.

Air Transat

Air Transat commenced operations in 1987 and is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The airline has a fleet of nearly 50 aircraft (fluctuating seasonally) flying to over 60 destinations. The largest in the fleet is the Airbus A330-300. Arriving in 2019 are Airbus A321LR models, to replace their classic fleet of Airbus A310-300 aircraft.
