N680TA: Avianca Costa Rica Airbus A320-200 (Originally With TACA)

Listen, I don’t think I’m alone when I say Avianca is a bit of a confusing mess. Outside of the main airline based in Colombia, there are eleven subsidiaries scattered throughout South and Central America. They all look the same, except for a small flag beside the registration number telling which country they’re from. N680TA is from Avianca Costa Rica, although some sources have the Airbus A320-200 with the El Salvador subsidiary.

We photographed N680TA while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on March 25, 2018. For full-size, high resolution versions for any of the photos in the image gallery, simply click on the individual pictures. See below for more detailed information on N680TA, the Airbus A320-200 model in general and the airline.

N680TA

N680TA performed its maiden flight on June 16, 2008 and was delivered to TACA on July 4, 2008. After TACA was acquired by Avianca, the Airbus A320-233 was transferred officially on March 31, 2014. The aircraft is configured for a maximum total of 150 passengers with 12 seats in business class and 138 economy class seats. The aircraft wears the flag of Costa Rica.

Airbus A320-200

The initial variant in the Airbus A320 Family, the Airbus A320-200 was first introduced with launch customer Air France in 1988. Since, nearly 4,400 have been put into service with airlines around the world.

The A320 is 38 metres or 123 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the aircraft stands 12 metres or 39 feet in height. The flight range is 6,100 kilometres. This variant is a direct competitor to the Boeing 737-800.

Avianca Costa Rica

Avianca Costa Rica has roots back to 1945 when it was founded as LACSA (Lineas Aereas Costarricenses S.A.). That airline was a joint venture between Pan American World Airways, the Costa Rican government and private investors.

LACSA went under the ownership of TACA in 1998. TACA was, in turn, acquired by Avianca in May, 2013. The Costa Rican subsidiary of Avianca is headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica and flies to 35 destinations.

Avianca is an airline based in Bogota, Colombia and is a member of the Star Alliance. The airline has eleven subsidiaries outside of Colombia (Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru, along with a cargo division, helicopter division and a regional carrier in Costa Rica). In total, there are 173 airplanes in the entire Avianca fleet, flying to 114 destinations.
