C-GZWS has had more than its fair share of mechanical problems. Compared to most of WestJet’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft, this B738 is, quite frankly, a lemon. We photographed this airliner on April 17, 2019 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GZWS

C-GZWS performed its first flight on May 18, 2005. The Boeing 737-8CT was delivered to WestJet Airlines on June 2, 2005. This airliner is configured for a maximum total of 174 passengers. There are 12 seats in premium economy and 162 economy class seats. This is one of 42 Boeing 737-800 models in the main fleet of this Canadian airline.

On April 9, 2012, C-GZWS was flying from Vancouver, British Columbia to Honolulu, Hawaii. Just 80 miles out of YVR, pressurization problems were identified. After burning fuel for two hours, the aircraft returned to Vancouver for a safe landing. C-GWRG was brought in as a replacement.

Later that year, on October 20, 2012, this B738 was flying from Orlando, Florida to Toronto, Ontario. Climbing out of Orlando, crew had issues with the elevator. The flight was continued to Toronto and, after declaring an emergency, landed safely. As a result, the elevator trim feel computer was replaced.

On June 29, 2013, C-GZWS was flying from Las Vegas, Nevada to Calgary, Alberta. Just after takeoff, an emergency was declared after the right side engine shut down. The aircraft diverted back to Las Vegas for a safe landing with just one engine. As a result, an engine fire detector loop was replaced.

Most recently, on May 15, 2016, this Boeing 737-800 was flying from Toronto, Ontario to Tampa, Florida. The initial takeoff attempt from Toronto was rejected at low speed after smoke was detected in the cockpit. It was determined the smoke resulted from residual fluid from the previous night’s pressure wash.
