C-FTJR: Air Canada Airbus A320-200 (With Airline Since 1991)

c-ftjr air canada airbus a320-200 toronto pearson yyzJust two years older than my motor home, a vehicle that many would be skeptical about at first sight, C-FTJR has been a loyal employee for Air Canada since 1991. We photographed the Airbus A320-200 on August 11, 2018 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-FTJR

C-FTJR performed its maiden flight on September 12, 1991 and the Airbus A320-211 was delivered to Air Canada on November 15, 1991. The airliner is configured for a maximum total of 146 passengers with 14 seats in business class, 36 more in premium economy and 96 economy class seats. This is one of 42 A320 models currently in the main fleet with eleven to be phased out in 2019.

2018 has been a bit active for C-FTJR. On March 31, 2018, the Airbus A320-200 was flying from Montreal, Quebec to Toronto, Ontario. A bird strike caused the initial climb to stop at 4,500 feet. The airplane returned to YUL for a safe landing after the crew experienced vibrations in the right side engine.

A few weeks later, the A320 was flying from Orlando, Florida to Halifax, Nova Scotia. At 24,000 feet, climbing out of Orlando, a thump was heard from the belly of the aircraft. The flight was continued toward its destination. When crew tried to drop the landing gear, there was no response, prompting an emergency declaration and a go-around. They then used alternate gear extension to lower the wheels and landed safely. After being towed to the terminal, it was determined that one of the left side main tires had burst. The burst tire was found to have caused damage to the gear doors which, in turn, caused all the issues during the flight.

The initial variant in the Airbus A320 Family, the Airbus A320-200 was introduced with launch customer Air France in 1988. Since, nearly 4,400 have been delivered. The airliner is 38 metres or 123 feet in length with a wingspan of 36 metres or 118 feet. At the tail, the airplane is 12 metres or 39 feet in height. The flight range is 6,100 kilometres.
