I’m sure there’s a branding strategy that will one day see all of WestJet’s aircraft painted in the new style livery. However, for now, it’s just their Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Boeing 787-9 airliners that have the new style. C-GAMQ is one of those Boeing 737 MAX 8 models. We photographed this B38M on August 5, 2022 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GAMQ
C-GAMQ performed its first flight on October 29, 2018. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was delivered to WestJet Airlines on November 13, 2018. This is one of 18 MAX 8 airliners currently in the fleet with two more on order. C-GAMQ is the tenth oldest B38M with WestJet.
This B38M is configured for a maximum total of 174 passengers. There are 12 seats in business class and 162 more in economy.
On December 11, 2021, the airplane had a flight from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Honolulu, Hawaii interrupted mid-flight by an oil filter bypass indication on the left side engine. A mayday was declared, the engine was shutdown as a precaution and the aircraft turned around at 430 nautical miles out of Vancouver and returned home safely.

Boeing 737 MAX 8
The initial variant in the Boeing 737 MAX family, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 made its maiden flight on January 29, 2016. The B38M was introduced with launch customer Malindo Air on May 22, 2017. In its infancy, the MAX family has over 4,000 orders with just 80 of those orders filled as of January, 2018.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length, making it slightly longer than the Boeing 737-800, the airliner it is replacing. The wingspan is 36 metres or 118 feet and the airplane stands 12 metres or 40 feet at the tail (making it slightly shorter than the B738). The flight range is 6,570 kilometres, which is a significant 1,000 KM increase over the Boeing 737-800.
WestJet Airlines
Founded in 1996, WestJet is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian airline has a fleet of nearly 170 aircraft. The largest in the fleet is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is the largest remaining operator of the Boeing 737-600. WestJet flies to nearly 110 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Not included is new ultra low cost carrier subsidiary Swoop. Swoop began service in June, 2018 with a small fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft and now mostly flying Boeing 737 MAX 8 models. Swoop will cease to exist at the end of October, 2023 with its aircraft integrated back into the mainline. Also to be integrated in the near future will be the fleet of Sunwing.
