C-GHQQ was delivered to Air Canada in 2015. It took until April of that year before the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had its first mechanical issue during a flight. Since, it has had two other fairly major problems. We photographed this B788 on September 8, 2019 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GHQQ

C-GHQQ performed its first flight on December 10, 2014. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was delivered to Air Canada on January 30, 2015. This B788 is configured for a maximum total of 255 passengers. There are 20 seats in business class, 21 more in premium economy and 214 economy class seats. This is the second newest Boeing 787-8 in the Canadian airline’s fleet of eight.

On April 26, 2015, this airliner was on a flight from Vancouver, British Columbia to Tokyo, Japan. Flying at 36,000 over the Gulf of Alaska, crew discovered a possible hydraulic leak and diverted back to Vancouver. The cause of the leak was a loose hydraulic line.

Again on a flight to Tokyo, this time from Calgary, Alberta, C-GHQQ had to turn back and divert to Vancouver. This time, an odour of burnt rubber was detected by the crew. All landing gear was checked for a burst tire but all came out clear. After landing at YVR, it was determined that a shipment of new tires in the cargo hold was the problem. The tires were off-loaded and the flight continued.

On August 24, 2018, this aircraft was flying from Montreal, Quebec to Shanghai, China. At 36,000, flying over Umiujaq in Northern Quebec, a Variable Frequency Starter Generator failed. It was found that the B788 did not have enough fuel to reach its destination. C-GHQQ diverted to Toronto, Ontario for a safe landing. As a result, the starter generator was replaced.
