They might not cart around passengers anymore but there are definitely more than a few McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft, like N587FE, still in the skies today. FedEx has 56 of these MD-11 freighters currently in the fleet. We photographed this MD-11F on April 17, 2019 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

N587FE

N587FE was first delivered to American Airlines on March 12, 1992 as N1754. American operated 19 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 airliners between 1991 and 2002. The airline was not impressed with the MD-11 and their initial order of 50 airplanes was cut short.

This airliner was converted to a freighter and delivered to FedEx on September 16, 1996. This is one of 56 in the fleet and the airplane is named ‘Jeanno’.

On November 7, 2014, N587FE was flying from Ontario, California to Memphis, Tennessee. Cruising at 37,000 feet, 130 miles south of Las Vegas, Nevada, crew received a cargo fire indication. The cargo fire suppression systems were activated and the flight diverted to Las Vegas.

On October 1, 2015, this McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was flying from Sacramento, California to Memphis. On final approach to the destination, a bird struck the nose gear. The aircraft continued on for a safe landing. The bird strike resulted in damage to the nose gear and a hydraulic line.
