Back in 2018, TC-JJZ was just minding it’s own business on the ground in Istanbul when a Royal Air Maroc Boeing 787-8 ran into it. More on that below. We photographed TC-JJZ on June 29, 2019 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

TC-JJZ

TC-JJZ performed its first flight on March 23, 2015. The Boeing 777-3F2ER was delivered to Turkish Airlines on April 15, 2015. This B77W is configured for a maximum total of 349 passengers. There are 49 seats in business class and 300 economy class seats. This is one of 33 Boeing 777-300ER models in the airline’s main fleet.

On August 9, 2018, TC-JJZ was parked on the ground at Istanbul-Ataturk International Airport. A Royal Air Maroc Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had just pushed back from the terminal and was taxiing to the runway when it struck the Turkish B77W. The right side wing tip struck the underside of the tail section of the Boeing 777. As a result, the APU covers were ripped away.

Boeing 777-300ER

The Boeing 777-300ER was first delivered to launch customer Air France in 2004, nearly a decade after the initial 777 variant was introduced with United Airlines in 1995. The ER is for ‘extended range’ and this aircraft can fly a lofty 13,650 kilometres between stops.

The B77W is 74 metres or 242 feet in length with a wingspan of 65 metres or 213 feet. At the tail, the airliner is 19 metres or 61 feet in height. Though not the most glamorous of the big airplanes, the Boeing 777-300ER is longer than both the Boeing 747-400 (by 10 feet) and Airbus A380-800 (by 3 feet).

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines was founded on May 20, 1933. Officially called THY Turkish Airlines, the THY stands for Turk Hava Yollari. The airline is headquartered at Instanbul Ataturk Airport (IST) and has a fleet of nearly 340 aircraft flying to over 300 destinations in 120 countries. A member of the Star Alliance of airlines, Turkish Airlines joined on April 1, 2008. Their largest aircraft at this time is the Boeing 777-300ER, an aircraft they have 33 of.
