The COVID-19 Pandemic has certainly changed the airline industry. It’s evident in Canada in the growth of ultra low cost carriers like Swoop, Flair Airlines and Lynx Air. We photographed C-GJKK, one of the first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in the Swoop Airlines fleet, on August 5, 2022 while plane spotting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

C-GJKK

C-GJKK is new to the skies as of June, 2022 but is not exactly a brand new aircraft. This Boeing 737 MAX 8 performed its first flight way back on May 3, 2019. It was first slated to be delivered to Norwegian Air as SE-RTE. However, Norwegian took it hard when the pandemic struck and, despite being painted in the airline’s livery, the aircraft never was put in service.

Next up, this B38M was to be delivered to Estonian airline SmartLynx as EI-GZD but, again, things didn’t go as planned. The airline was to add MAX 8’s to their fleet in April, 2022 but, as of yet, still has none in service.

C-GJKK finally found a job, delivered to Swoop on June 22, 2022. The aircraft is named #swoopster and is, along with C-GORP, among the first two B38M aircraft in the fleet of the WestJet subsidiary. There are four more slated for arrival before the end of 2022.

This airplane is configured in the standard 737NG single class style with 189 seats, all in economy class.

Boeing 737 MAX 8

The initial variant in the Boeing 737 MAX family, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 made its maiden flight on January 29, 2016. The B38M was introduced with launch customer Malindo Air on May 22, 2017. In its infancy, the MAX family has over 4,000 orders with just 80 of those orders filled as of January, 2018.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is 40 metres or 130 feet in length, making it slightly longer than the Boeing 737-800, the airliner it is replacing. The wingspan is 36 metres or 118 feet and the airplane stands 12 metres or 40 feet at the tail (making it slightly shorter than the B738). The flight range is 6,570 kilometres, which is a significant 1,000 KM increase over the Boeing 737-800.

Swoop Airlines

The main hubs for this airline are Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Edmonton International Airport (YEG).
